The problem in terms of finding the right storage solution is that timber comes in multiple lengths. Likewise, plasterboard and sheet materials need to lie flat, while pipes and steel sections are long and heavy. Bagged cement and aggregates also require strong, accessible shelving.
No single racking system handles this combination of products well, which is why merchants typically run a mix of storage solutions across their yards and trade counters.
That said, one system tends to be the workhorse of the merchant yard above all others: cantilever racking.
Below, we explain why cantilever racking is so well suited to builders merchant storage, what it can and cannot handle and which other racking types you might use alongside it.
Why Builders Merchants Have Unique Storage Challenges
The product range stocked by a typical builders merchant creates storage challenges that most standard warehouse racking is not designed to address.
Pallet racking, for example, is built around a standardised pallet footprint. It works well for bagged materials and boxed goods that sit squarely within a bay, but it cannot accommodate timber lengths of three or four metres that overhang the racking structure. Conventional shelving handles small items well but cannot carry the weight of heavy lintels or structural sections. Plus, for sheet materials like plywood, MDF and plasterboard, most standard storage options either waste space, cause damage through improper support or create an unacceptable manual handling risk.
The ideal storage solution for a builders merchant yard needs to:
- Handle materials of varying and often considerable length
- Support heavy loads without deflection or instability
- Allow fast access by forklift or side loader with minimal manoeuvring
- Work safely both indoors and in external yard environments
- Be adjustable as stock ranges and volumes change

What Is Cantilever Racking?

Cantilever racking is a storage system built around vertical steel columns and horizontal arms that project outward from those columns without any front upright or cross-beam obstructing the face of the rack. The open-fronted design is the defining feature. Because there is nothing blocking the front, materials of any length can be placed across the arms and accessed cleanly from the aisle, either by forklift, side loader or manually.
The arms are adjustable in height increments, typically 150mm, so the system can be reconfigured as stock profiles change. Columns can be supplied as single-sided for use against a wall or double-sided for freestanding runs in a yard or warehouse. Heights typically range from around 2.5 metres up to six metres or more for heavy-duty installations, and bespoke configurations can go higher.
Standard arm capacities range from 250kg for light-duty arms up to 1,000kg or more per arm for heavy-duty versions, with the total bay capacity determined by the number of arms, the column rating and the load distribution. For a builders merchant handling structural timber, heavy lintels or steel sections, heavy-duty cantilever is usually the appropriate specification.
Why Cantilever Racking Is the Best Choice for Builders Merchants
It handles long materials that no other racking system can: Standard pallet racking has a fixed bay width, typically around 2.7 metres between uprights, and a defined depth. Timber lengths of 3.6 metres, 4.8 metres or longer simply do not fit without significant overhang, which creates structural loading issues and a safety risk. Cantilever racking has no such constraint. Arms can be specified at the length needed for the load, and runs can be extended along a continuous column line to store materials of almost any length in an organised, accessible way.
This makes it the only practical solution for the long softwood and hardwood timber, structural beams, skirting and architrave runs, and steel sections that form the core of most merchant yards.
Sheet materials are stored flat and fully supported: Plywood, MDF, OSB, plasterboard and similar sheet products need to be stored flat to prevent bowing, edge damage and warping.
Cantilever arms provide continuous support across the width of the sheets, allowing packs to be laid horizontally across multiple arms without sagging. Individual packs are easily separated and accessed without disturbing adjacent stock, which reduces handling time and damage rates.
Plasterboard in particular benefits from being kept off the ground and fully supported. A single dropped or broken sheet represents a direct margin hit, and poorly stored plasterboard that has absorbed moisture or been damaged in handling is a frequent source of customer complaints and returns.
Accessible by forklift with minimal manoeuvring: The open face of cantilever racking means a forklift or telescopic handler can approach an aisle, insert the forks under the load and lift it clear in a single movement. There are no front uprights to navigate around, no beams at mid-height to catch long materials on, and no need to break down a load to access stock on different levels. This is a significant operational advantage in a busy merchant yard where speed of service matters and forklift operators need to pick and place efficiently throughout the day.
Suitable for outdoor yard use: A builders merchant yard is a working environment exposed to the British climate. Cantilever racking for external use is supplied with a hot-dip galvanised finish that provides effective corrosion resistance without the maintenance requirements of painted or powder-coated steel.
Galvanised cantilever racking is suitable for long-term outdoor installation and requires no special treatment beyond the routine inspections that any racking system requires.
Some installations also incorporate canopy or roof structures over sensitive bays to protect materials such as plasterboard and untreated timber from direct rainfall, which helps reduce stock damage and wastage without compromising access.
The yard layout becomes safer and easier to manage: A merchant yard that stores timber and sheet materials on the floor, propped against walls or stacked in poorly defined areas is a significant health and safety risk. Long materials left unsupported can fall. Forklifts have reduced visibility around informal stock piles. Staff and customers moving through the yard face a cluttered, hazardous environment.
Cantilever racking brings discipline to the yard: Materials are stored at defined heights, clearly labelled and accessible from defined aisle positions. Fork access is straightforward and predictable. The yard looks more professional to trade customers, which also matters for first impressions at the trade counter.
What Materials Can Cantilever Racking Store in a Builders Merchant?

Cantilever racking in a typical builders merchant environment is used to store:
- Softwood and hardwood timber in multiple lengths and profiles
- Plywood, MDF, OSB and other structural sheet materials
- Plasterboard in single sheets and full packs
- Concrete and steel lintels
- Steel sections, box sections and hollow structural sections
- PVC and UPVC window and door profiles
- Plastic and copper pipe
- Roofing battens, skirting, architrave and other mouldings

In most merchant operations, the heaviest and longest items are stored on lower arms where stability is greatest and handling is easiest, with lighter or shorter sections held higher. Arm spacing is set to match the product being stored on each level, which can be reconfigured as stock changes.

While cantilever racking handles the majority of long and sheet material storage, a well-planned builders merchant will typically run it alongside other systems for different product categories.
Pallet Racking
Adjustable pallet racking is well suited to bagged products such as cement, aggregates, sand and plaster, which arrive and are stored on pallets. It also works for boxed goods such as fixings, insulation rolls in box format and plumbing fittings. Where the product sits within standard pallet dimensions and does not overhang, conventional pallet racking offers a cost-effective and familiar storage solution.
Pigeon Hole Or Horizontal Carpet Racking
For shorter timber offcuts, mouldings and profiles that need to be hand-picked rather than fork-loaded, a pigeon hole rack system provides individual cubby sections at a comfortable working height. This separates hand-picking operations from forklift areas, which is important for yard safety, and allows staff to pick individual lengths quickly without needing mechanical assistance.
Heavy Duty Shelving
At the trade counter and in any retail or display area, heavy duty boltless or longspan shelving is typically used for smaller items such as fixings, sealants, adhesives and hand tools. This is the most manual and customer-facing part of the operation, where accessibility and product visibility matter more than bulk storage density.
Indoor vs Outdoor Cantilever Racking: What Is the Difference?
The structural configuration of cantilever racking is the same whether it is used indoors or outside, but the finish specification differs.
- Indoor cantilever racking is typically supplied with a powder-coated finish in standard industrial colours. It is not designed for prolonged exposure to moisture and should not be used in outdoor or partially open locations without the appropriate corrosion protection.
- Outdoor cantilever racking is hot-dip galvanised, providing a far more durable corrosion-resistant surface that performs reliably in exposed environments over the long term. For a builders merchant yard, galvanised is the correct specification.
It is worth noting that not all suppliers stock galvanised cantilever as standard. If you are fitting a yard installation, confirm the finish specification before ordering, as substituting powder-coated for galvanised in an outdoor location will result in premature corrosion and a significantly shortened service life.
Cantilever Racking Safety And Inspection For Builders Merchants
Like all racking systems, cantilever racking is classified as work equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). This means it must be regularly inspected and maintained to remain safe and legally compliant.
For a builders merchant, where forklift activity in the yard is frequent and the loads being handled are heavy, the inspection regime matters. The HSE and SEMA both recommend:
- Weekly visual checks by a trained in-house person, looking for impact damage to columns and arms, deflection in loaded arms, missing or damaged floor fixings and any displaced or missing arm pins
- An annual expert inspection by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI), producing a written report with any damage categorised using the SEMA traffic light system
Load notices must be displayed on the system showing the maximum arm load and bay load. Overloading arms, particularly with heavy lintels or steel sections, is a common cause of deflection and eventual failure. All staff who operate forklifts near the racking should be trained to report any impact damage immediately rather than leaving it until a scheduled inspection.
