What Is Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Double deep pallet racking is a high-density warehouse storage system that stores pallets two deep from a single working aisle. By positioning two rows of racking back-to-back, you can increase your pallet positions by up to 50% compared to standard wide aisle pallet racking, without requiring additional floor space or extra aisles.

The system works using a specialist deep-reach forklift fitted with either telescopic forks or a pantograph (scissor) mechanism. This allows the operator to safely retrieve the rear pallet without needing to enter the racking structure. Aisle widths typically range from 2,500mm to 3,500mm depending on the reach truck specification. We liaise with your forklift supplier during the design phase to confirm exact requirements.

Double deep racking uses the same structural components as standard adjustable pallet racking, including frames, beams, and accessories. This makes it straightforward to extend, reconfigure, or integrate with existing wide aisle systems as your operation grows.

At Logical Storage Solutions, we design, supply, and install double deep racking systems across the UK. As an owner-managed business with over 14 years of industry experience, every installation is completed by our in-house team with no subcontractors and no handoffs. Every project is delivered in full compliance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM), with detailed risk assessments and method statements provided as standard. For further guidance on safe racking in the workplace, see the HSE's racking safety guidance.

Double Deep Racking Frequently Asked Questions

What is double deep pallet racking?

Double deep pallet racking is a variant of standard adjustable pallet racking where two rows of racking are positioned back-to-back, allowing pallets to be stored two deep from a single working aisle. It increases warehouse storage density significantly compared to wide aisle racking, at the cost of reduced selectivity. Only the front pallet in each lane is directly accessible without moving the rear pallet first.

How much does double deep pallet racking cost?

The cost of a double deep racking installation depends on the number of pallet positions required, your warehouse ceiling height, floor condition, and whether any existing racking needs to be modified or removed. Logical Storage Solutions provides free, no-obligation site surveys and tailored quotations across the UK. Contact us to arrange a visit and receive a fixed-price proposal.

What forklift do you need for double deep racking?

Double deep racking requires a specialist reach truck equipped with telescopic forks or a pantograph (scissor fork) mechanism. This allows the operator to retrieve the rear pallet from the working aisle without entering the racking structure. Standard counterbalance forklifts cannot access the rear pallet position. We advise on compatible handling equipment as part of our site survey and design process.

How deep is a standard double deep pallet rack?

A standard double deep bay is typically 2,400mm to 2,500mm deep, accommodating two standard Euro or UK pallets (each approximately 1,200mm deep) back-to-back with the clearances required for safe loading and retrieval. Exact frame depths are confirmed during the design stage based on your specific pallet dimensions and the reach capability of your forklift.

Is double deep racking the same as drive-in racking?

No. Double deep racking stores pallets two deep and requires a deep-reach forklift to access each lane from the working aisle, retaining some selectivity with the front pallet directly accessible at all times. Drive-in racking stores pallets multiple deep, typically four or more, and the forklift drives inside the racking structure to load and retrieve. Drive-in racking offers higher density but far lower selectivity. Double deep racking is a practical middle ground between standard wide aisle racking and full compact storage systems.
